In this sprawling Mall, those not accustomed to an urban mall, could easily become lost. Unlike Butler Plaza, Gainesville’s Oaks Mall’s stores are tightly packed for optimal shopping. Butler Plaza is a shopping center that rival’s Oaks Mall in how many people use it yet not in exquisite professionalism and invoking a truly I-have-to-spend-all-my-money-on-those-pair-of-jeans-or-I’ll-die mentality. The Oaks Mall in Gainesville caters to all people. Whether you are Black, White, Hispanic, Indian, African, European, Asian, Pacific Islander, handicap, lower-class, middle-class, and/or anything under the sun, Oaks Mall provides the same shopping or window shopping experience for all. Most companies affiliated with the Oaks Mall are equal- opportunity employers such as Claire’s, Lids, Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, wet Seal, Things Remembered, and others. Clothing is primary for thing sold at Oaks Mall with over fifty venues selling everything from designer such as
Bebe, Banana Republic, Coach, and White Black to places like GAP and Giti to places people have never heard of. There are five main venues and anchor stores that reside in Oaks Mall they are as follows: JcPenny, Belk, Sears, Macy’s, and Dillard’s. These fantastic five of the Gainesville Oaks Mall are overall the dominant stores in size and annual income. JcPenny is a mid-range chain of American department stores based in Plano, Texas, a suburb north of Dallas. The company operates 1,093 department stores in 49 of the 50 U.S. states (except Hawaii) and Puerto Rico. In addition to selling the usual merchandise, J. C. Penney stores often house several leased departments such as Sephora, Optical, Portrait Studios, Jewelry & Watch repair, etc. Macy’s is a chain of mid-to-high range American department stores. Its selection of merchandise can vary significantly from location to location, resulting in the exclusive availability of certain brands in only higher-end stores. Its flagship store in Herald Square, New York City was recognized as the world's largest department store from 1924 until June 2009 when it was surpassed by Shinsengae Centumcity in South Korea. The company has designated additional regional flagships in major urban centers and operates a total of 810 U.S. stores (as of September 2008). The company produces the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a well known parade which has been held on the streets of New York City annually since 1924. The company also sponsors the city's annual Fourth of July fireworks display, which began in 1976 and has continued ever since. Dillard’s is the outgrowth of a Nashville, Arkansas, department store founded in 1938 by William T. Dillard; its corporate headquarters remain located in the eastern edge of Little Rock's Riverdale area, and many of its executives and directors are members of the Dillard family. Sears is an American mid-range chain of international department stores which was founded by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Roebuck in the late 19th century. Formerly a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Sears merged with Kmart in early 2005, creating the Sears Holdings Corporation and found a yet another home at Gainesville’s Oaks Mall. Last but not least, Belk is a department store chain founded in 1888 in Monroe, North Carolina, by William Henry Belk which grew in size and influence throughout the South via chain in the United States, with its stores primarily located in the Southern United States. Oaks Mall has the pleasure of hosting all of these big name department stores and has monetized financially and substantially on Gainesville’s appreciation. Oaks Mall is surrounded by shopping venues that are not actually a part of the Oaks Mall and are mentioned here because popular food, eyewear, and clothing venue traffic customers through the Oaks Mall’s popularity with consumers. Such places are Petco, Staples, McDonald’s, Boston Market (the external store) and Sweetbay among others.
