Pensacola Regional Airport

Pensacola Regional Airport resides in the City of Pensacola. The City of Pensacola is located in Escambia County and the westernmost city in the Florida Panhandle. The first large United States Naval Air Station in the United States, is located southwest of Pensacola and is home to the Blue Angels flight demonstration team and the National Museum of Naval Aviation. Pensacola is nicknamed the “City of Five Flags” because of the five governments who controlled Pensacola; Great Britain, Spain, France, the Confederate States, and the United States. Passing from one country to the next,
Pensacola was the first place to be settled by Mexicans after many explorers such as Hernando de Soto and Ponce de Leon. With such a rich history, Pensacola is a very popular tourist attraction and Pensacola Regional Airport is the gateway to history and naval military at its finest. Pensacola Regional Airport is owned and operated by the City of Pensacola and was begun in 1933 after the owner of the San Carlos Hotel, Conner Hagler, with his trusty sidekick, Harry Blanchard a pilot, purchased five hundred thirty-four acres of woodland and established an airport on it. World War II brought about the United States Navy control of the Pensacola Regional Airport from 1942 to 1945. The 1950’s saw the airport gain a stronger sense of permanence with the construction of a new terminal (12,000 square feet) and control tower. Parts of “The Wings of Eagles”, with John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Dan Dailey and director John Ford, were filmed at the airport in 1956. Technical improvements highlighted 1957, with runway approach lights and the instrument landing system (ILS). Today, the Pensacola Regional Airport handles over ninety-six plane departures and arrivals and is served by eleven airlines: American Eagle, Continental Connection, Continental Express, Delta Connection/ASA, Delta Connection/Chautauqua, Northwest Airlink/Pinnacle, US Airways Express/PSA, and US Airways Express/Mesa that handle regional flights and two commercial airlines AirTran Airways and Delta Air Lines. The property has been expanded from five hundred thirty-four acres of woodland to one thousand three hundred acres of pure aviation playground and business.
