The City of Gainesville is culturally-enriched place of development and diversity filled events. Welcoming people from all over the world, Gainesville is the house and home of the University of Florida, Gainesville Regional Airport, the Hippodrome Theatre, Phillips Center for Performing Arts, and a wide expanse of cultures, religions, and ideas. To celebrate the diversity of the City of Gainesville, the Department of Cultural Affairs holds many events for the enlightenment of the population of the citizens of Gainesville. In the cold, winter months of January and February, there is the Hoggetown Medieval Fair. The Hoggetown Medieval Fair is open for people of all ages to enjoy a time travel back to Medieval Ages where knights saved damsels in distress from the dragons and Kings reigned with religion and their many armies. Entertainment at the Fair includes an actual jousting match on horseback between majestic knights using lance and shields, a human-chess board match, human powered rides, acrobats who juggle fire multiple other oddities, and roughly 150 merchants and artisans selling their crafts, food, and wares of the Middle Ages.
Moving into March, Gainesville hosts the renowned NHRA GatorNationals. Motorcycle rides that have always been a history making race full of flips and tricks guaranteed to rev and pump adrenaline through your system. After that thrilling month the Department of Cultural Affairs wisely gives Gainesville time to cool off. Then during the Spring there is the May through September Downtown Community Plaza proudly shows off local bands and entertainment. Cultural events are often also held there at night. Then during the months of September and November there is the Artsreach Program in which artist both local and out of state showcase their art in the Gainesville Regional Airport, Alachua County Administration Building, and City Hall. In early November during the fall is the Downtown Festival and Arts Show where artists and vendors from all over Florida display their paintings, photographs, drawings, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, mosaics, handicrafts, and sculptures. North Central Florida proudly hosts this festival which happens to be North Central Florida’s most electrifying fall festival, people from all over come to enjoy the live entertainment, arts and crafts, and over 250 exhibits of North Central Florida’s most talented artists, jewelers, and sculptors. This beautiful, eloquently put together event has been rated among the top 200 best shows in the country by Sunshine Artist Magazine. It voted it one of the best events in the whole nation of the United States. The highly acclaimed Jazz Festival is a part of the Downtown Festival and Arts Show and a completely free concert experience. National as well as local bands play for your entertainment on three stages of the two day duration of the festival. At last we get to the coldest month of the year. In December there is the Downtown Countdown: A New Year’s Celebration. We bring in the New Year here in Gainesville with music from local band, radio station parties, giveaways, and the usual countdown to the New Year. Along with the annual events, there are other events such as gator games and other things people entertain themselves with.
